Before you rely on it
Practise with a compass and a map on a known route before you need them, and keep the compass away from phones, magnets and metal while taking a bearing. Check a first aid kit before each trip and replace what has been used or is past its date.
Small enough to always carry
- Tube: a plain titanium tube 55 mm long and 8 mm across, with an angled sound slot.
- Cord hole: a hole through the top for the cord, a split ring or a carabiner.
- Cord: a red cord with reflective threads, long enough to wear round the neck.
- Finish: a matt grey metal with no paint to chip.
It is a signal whistle for walks, camp and the water. Blow it in short blasts to be heard; three blasts is the widely used call for help.
