Before you rely on it
Practise with a compass and a map on a known route before you need them, and keep the compass away from phones, magnets and metal while taking a bearing. Check a first aid kit before each trip and replace what has been used or is past its date.
Made for the map
- Clear baseplate: see the map through the plate while you take a bearing.
- Rotating bezel: marked in degrees, with orienting lines in the capsule.
- Magnifier: a round lens in the plate for reading fine map detail.
- Map scales: 1:24,000, 1:25,000, 1:50,000, 1:63,360 and 1:250,000 along the edges, plus metric and imperial rulers.
- Neck lanyard: keeps it at hand on the course.
- Bright colours: neon yellow, orange and blue are easy to spot if dropped; clear keeps the whole map visible.
The needle settles in under two seconds, the supplier says. It is a basic plate compass without a sighting mirror or declination adjustment, which suits beginners, scouts and orienteering practice. Keep it away from phones, magnets and steel when you take a bearing.
