Practise with a compass and a map on a known route before you need them, and keep the compass away from phones, magnets and metal while taking a bearing. Check a first aid kit before each trip and replace what has been used or is past its date.

Can I navigate with it? It shows north and the rough direction you are walking. For taking bearings from a map, use a baseplate compass.

Does the thermometer show Fahrenheit? No. The dial is in degrees Celsius.

Why is the needle off? Hold it level and away from phones, magnets and metal, which pull the needle.
