Before you rely on it

Practise with a compass and a map on a known route before you need them, and keep the compass away from phones, magnets and metal while taking a bearing. Check a first aid kit before each trip and replace what has been used or is past its date.

Take a bearing, read the slope

Sighting lid: a window with a cross-hair and a flip-up lens for aiming at a landmark.
Clinometer: a swing-out scale reads slope angles from 0 to 90 degrees.
Luminous dial: the bezel and needle glow after being in the light.
Bubble level: hold the compass flat before you read it.
Map scales: a centimetre ruler and distance scales along the edges.
Metal body: with a thumb loop and a lanyard ring.

At 300 g (supplier-stated) it is heavier than a plastic baseplate compass; it rides in its pouch on a belt or in a lid pocket. Water and shock resistance are as the supplier states them (IP65); keep it away from phones and magnets when you take a bearing.

Can I use it on a map? Yes. The edges carry a centimetre ruler and distance scales for measuring on the map.
