Before you rely on it
Practise with a compass and a map on a known route before you need them, and keep the compass away from phones, magnets and metal while taking a bearing. Check a first aid kit before each trip and replace what has been used or is past its date.
A lid for the pocket, a dial for the path
- Hinged lid: a brushed gold-tone lid that closes over the dial in a pocket or a pack.
- Rotating bezel: a white ring marked in degrees with a red N, turned by hand to set a direction.
- Luminous markings: the bezel and the needle glow after daylight or torchlight (supplier-stated).
- Dial: a cream face with a red and black compass rose and the eight points marked.
- Ring: a loop at the hinge for a cord, a lanyard or a chain.
It is about 50 mm across and 16 mm deep, a keepsake-sized compass that also works on the trail for checking north. For taking bearings off a map, a baseplate compass is the better tool.

Frequently asked questions
Does it glow in the dark? The bezel markings and the needle are luminous (supplier-stated): hold them to daylight or a torch for a moment and they glow for reading at dusk.
Why does the needle point the wrong way? Hold it level and away from phones, magnets and steel, which pull the needle off north.
What do I hang it from? The ring at the hinge takes a cord, a lanyard or a small chain.
