Choosing traction
Ice cleats and spikes are for icy paths and packed snow on ordinary boots; crampons with front points are for steep ice and snow and need stiff boots made for them. Check the shoe sizes each size fits, and take them off on rock and indoors.
Grip where you step
- Seven studs: tungsten steel studs set in a rubber pad (supplier-stated).
- Mid-sole fit: the pad sits under the arch, so heel and toe stay free for a normal step.
- Adjustable strap: a wide orange strap with a buckle and metal rings fits trainers, walking shoes and winter boots.
- Turn it up indoors: the pad can be turned up on the strap when you step inside, the supplier says, so you need not take it off.
- Easy to see: the bright strap is easy to find in the snow.
These are made for icy paths, pavements and packed-snow trails, not for steep ice or mountaineering. Walk flat-footed on ice and take them off before stone or tiled floors, where the studs can slip and scratch.
