Choosing traction
Ice cleats and spikes are for icy paths and packed snow on ordinary boots; crampons with front points are for steep ice and snow and need stiff boots made for them. Check the shoe sizes each size fits, and take them off on rock and indoors.
Grip for icy paths and packed snow
- Studs: 11 metal studs under each cleat, 7 under the forefoot and 4 under the heel.
- Frame: stretchy rubber that hugs the edge of the sole, with an open window under the arch.
- Strap: a hook-and-loop strap crosses the top of the forefoot to hold the cleat in place.
- Ribs: raised chevron ribs between the forefoot studs add grip on softer snow.
- Packable: flat and light enough to carry in a pocket or a daypack until the ice starts.
They are made for walking on icy paths, frozen tracks and packed snow, not for steep ice or mountaineering. Take them off on bare rock, indoors and on smooth floors, where metal studs slip. Pick the size by your shoe size; between two sizes, the larger one is easier to pull over a chunky boot.

Do they fit over walking boots? Yes. The rubber frame stretches over the sole of a walking boot or an everyday shoe; choose the size for your shoe size.
Can I walk indoors in them? Take them off indoors and on smooth floors or bare rock: the metal studs grip ice, not hard, smooth surfaces.
How do I put them on? Hook the toe of the frame over the front of the shoe, pull the heel cup up over the back of the sole, then close the strap across the forefoot.
