Before you rely on it
Practise with a compass and a map on a known route before you need them, and keep the compass away from phones, magnets and metal while taking a bearing. Check a first aid kit before each trip and replace what has been used or is past its date.
Direction and temperature at a glance
- Compass: a round domed compass at the base with the four cardinal points marked.
- Thermometer: a glass tube with a Celsius scale on one side and Fahrenheit on the other, reading from about -30 to 50 °C.
- Clip: a spring gate that snaps onto straps, loops and key rings.
- Size: 7.4 cm long, 3.6 cm wide and 1 cm thick.
The clip is a keyring-style carabiner for hanging small things: it is not for climbing and must never carry a load. For route finding on a map, use a baseplate compass; this one gives a quick heading on the move. Keep it away from phones, magnets and metal buckles when you read it.

Frequently asked questions
Can I climb with this carabiner? No. It is a clip for hanging a compass on a strap, not safety equipment.
Why does the needle drift near my phone? Magnets, phones and steel buckles pull the needle. Hold it away from them and level when you take a reading.
