Choosing traction

Ice cleats and spikes are for icy paths and packed snow on ordinary boots; crampons with front points are for steep ice and snow and need stiff boots made for them. Check the shoe sizes each size fits, and take them off on rock and indoors.

Toe and heel cages with twelve steel points

  • Twelve points: Ten points grip under the sole and two front points bite when you kick into a slope.
  • Cage binding: The toe and heel cages hold your boot, so no welt or clip is needed.
  • Sliding centre bar: A perforated bar with a locking plate sets the length for EU boot sizes 36 to 46.
  • Bright webbing: Orange straps and frame inserts are easy to find in the snow and in a dark pack.

Wear them with firm hiking boots; soft trainers flex and let the frame shift. Set the length at home before your first walk, and take them off on rock and tarmac to keep the points sharp.
