Before you rely on it
Practise with a compass and a map on a known route before you need them, and keep the compass away from phones, magnets and metal while taking a bearing. Check a first aid kit before each trip and replace what has been used or is past its date.
One small whistle, two dials
- Whistle: A one-piece plastic whistle with a flat mouthpiece.
- Compass: A small dial with the four cardinal points and the points between them on one side.
- Thermometer: A round dial marked in degrees Celsius on the other side.
- Cord: A 40 cm black cord through the loop at the back.
- Compact: 6 cm long and 2.8 cm high, light enough to forget it is there.
The compass gives rough direction, not bearings for map work, and the thermometer is a simple dial for a rough reading. Keep it away from phones and magnets when you read the compass.
