Reading the figures
Battery capacity, charge times and solar output are the supplier's figures: a solar panel reaches its rated output only in full sun, facing it directly. Water resistance is an IPX rating under IEC 60529 where one is stated; charge and store devices dry.
Wind it, sun it or plug it in
- Three ways to charge: Turn the crank, set the solar panel in daylight or charge from a USB power source.
- AM, FM and weather band: Tune AM and FM stations or the NOAA weather band broadcast in the US and Canada.
- Torch and reading lamp: A front LED torch for the path and a top lamp for reading in the tent.
- SOS light and siren: A red flashing light and a loud siren to make yourself noticed.
- Phone top-up: A USB output passes power from the built-in battery to a phone.
- Carry strap: A wrist strap and a fold-down crank handle for the pack or the glovebox.
Choose your model before you buy. The compact model has a 2000 mAh battery, and the larger 4000 mAh model adds a battery-level display and an AAA battery compartment. Cranking gives a slow top-up, not a full charge, and the weather band only carries broadcasts in the US and Canada. Battery figures are the supplier's.
