Choosing traction
Ice cleats and spikes are for icy paths and packed snow on ordinary boots; crampons with front points are for steep ice and snow and need stiff boots made for them. Check the shoe sizes each size fits, and take them off on rock and indoors.
Toothed plates on steel chains
- Toothed plates: Star-shaped stainless steel plates sit under the forefoot and the heel.
- Linked chains: Welded steel chains run across the sole and hold the plates in place.
- Stretch harness: The TPE harness stretches over the toe and heel of the boot and pulls snug.
- Heat-treated steel: The listing gives the steel as heat-treated grade 201 stainless.
- Two colours: An orange harness that is easy to spot in snow, or a plain black one.
Chain crampons are for icy trails and packed snow, not for technical climbing or steep ice. Fit them to the boot before you set off, with the heel tab at the back.

Which way round do they go? The harness is marked BACK at the heel. Hook the front over the toe, then stretch the back over the heel.
Will they fit trail shoes? They are made for hiking boots and sturdy shoes in EU sizes 36 to 45.
Can I walk on rock with them? Take them off on bare rock and indoors: the steel wears quickly and slips on smooth stone.
